Chiropractic for the Elderly
Updated: Jul 27, 2022

All of us strive to stay healthy and strong to live our lives to the fullest. But, time is a difficult foe to beat. As we get older, our bones and immunity may deteriorate. This makes it increasingly difficult to remain active and maintain a high-quality life. For this reason, chiropractic has become one of the most essential areas of healthcare among the elderly today.
Chiropractic is a natural and gentle way of promoting good health–and there are many ways in which it can help seniors maintain a quality life. Have a look at four such ways in which chiropractic care has proven to help senior citizens.

Chiropractic can help reduce pain
Pain is common in old age, but it isn’t reversible. And if the root of the problem causing the pain is left undiagnosed, it can become a chronic problem. One of the most common problems faced by senior citizens is pain in their joints. With time, the cartilage between the joints wear down and may cause bones to rub together. Chiropractic adjustments can help ease this pain and reduce wear and tear.
Spinal misalignments is another factor that causes body pain. A misaligned spine may interrupt the communication between the spinal cord and the body. At Lotus Chiropractic Care, we can gently realign your spine and restore efficient nerve communication, therefore reducing pain signals. I have seen this to be immensely helpful in easing the pain that comes with old age.

The quality of sleep can be improved
Lack of proper sleep is commonly faced by some. Underlying medical conditions or muscle tensions can be common causes behind lack of quality sleep. Chiropractic care can identify the root of the problem and help you get a good night’s sleep.
There are three main things we consider in helping to improve sleep:
Getting a Chiropractic adjustment, allows the body to get into parasympathetic mode, putting the body in rest and digest mode. It helps improve your quality of sleep.
- We can assess your sleeping positions and help you identify the best sleeping position for your body. More often than not, a good sleeping position helps your body return to its natural, calm state.
- We advise our patients regarding their choice of pillow and mattress. Proper neck and back support are crucial to help you sleep better.
- We give our patients a set of simple stretches and routines they can practice. This helps relax your muscles and release tension.
Retain your mobility and stay active
Decreased mobility may make it difficult for people to stay active as they age. Chronic pain and discomfort is a common cause behind immobility. Chiropractic adjustments has proven to help improve mobility between joints by realigning your spine and joints to their natural state. At lotus along with alignment, we provide our patients with exercises to keep their tendons and ligaments healthy and strong. In doing so it will improve mobility with proper biomechanics making it more comfortable for our senior patients to move with ease.
Chiropractic brings an overall wellness
Chiropractic treatment can be beneficial for the entire body–not just the musculoskeletal system. Improving your spinal health can be key in healing a variety of health conditions faced by the elderly. Spinal adjustments can help treat back pain, digestive issues, improve immunity, bring clarity to the mind, gait, posture, balance and much more. Getting good chiropractic care can thus help you maintain a healthy body.
My experience with Cynthia
Cynthia–an 82-year-old patient who was a nurse, had come in with excruciating sciatic pain. She has had hip surgery and also had a history of cancer. One thing she had shared with me was her love for gardening. It was her favorite pastime, but her body pain had hindered her mobility. She needed a cane to walk around.
At Lotus, we offered gentle chiropractic care. She was eligible to get adjusted and get the care she needed to heal. Within a month, her pain had reduced and she was able to walk without a cane. Even with her hip reconstruction, her hip mobility had improved significantly. Cynthia was very excited about getting back into gardening and doing the manual intensive work by herself–like cutting grass or moving rocks.
Cynthia comes in for a tune-up once every two weeks because we help her stay mobile, stable, pain-free, and healthy. Cynthia’s gait transformed from having a foot flare due to her hip surgery to a more neutral gait. We also provided custom orthotics which improved her balance tremendously and reduced her chances of falling.
Before, she was very skeptical of chiropractic care, but now she is a raving fan and never misses her appointments.
