Chiropractic care for fibromyalgia

Updated: Jul 27, 2022

Chiropractic care for fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is one of the most common cases diagnosed in the US. The American College of Rheumatology states that it affects one in every fifty Americans. And that is quite an alarming rate!

The problem is that fibromyalgia can be difficult to treat–since it is a chronic condition. Doctors can prescribe pain medications to help treat its symptoms, but people are constantly looking for natural alternatives to treat fibromyalgia. And among natural remedies, chiropractic care has proven to be immensely effective in treating or “controlling” the pain caused by fibromyalgia.

What causes fibromyalgia? And how can chiropractic help treat its symptoms? Let us get into it

Spinal realignment

Fibromyalgia and the possible causes

If I could put it simply, fibromyalgia is a condition that affects the way the nervous system processes pain. The CNS overstimulates the fascia (a connective tissue that surrounds the muscles, organs, blood vessels, and bones), “amplifying” the pain throughout the body.

The direct cause behind this condition is unknown. However, there are many things that can trigger fibromyalgia among individuals. These triggers include-

- Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

- Anxiety or Depression

- Painful diseases like Arthritis

- Physical inactivity

- Genetic (It is common for Fibromyalgia to run in families)

Note that fibromyalgia is also known to develop gradually–without any particular trigger. And its common symptoms can include excessive pain, mood swings, headache, fatigue, and depression.

Now, to the second question–how can chiropractic help you deal with fibromyalgia? There are 4 big ways in which chiropractic has proven to be effective in treating this condition–let me walk you through them

Spinal realignment for better communication

A misaligned spine can hinder effective communication across the CNS. To be more precise–when the spine (especially the cervical spine), gets misaligned out of its normal position, it hinders the nervous system’s ability to transmit pain signals or any other information between the body and the brain. Think of it as a “block” that appears inside your spine, not allowing information to pass through effectively. And this faulty or inaccurate transmission of pain signals is one of the biggest factors behind fibromyalgia!

Chiropractic adjustments can help realign the spine to its natural position, resetting the CNS in the process. The realignment of the cervical structure can “make way” for more/accurate information to flow to the brain–thus allowing the body to work naturally as it should.

fibromyalgia

Helps reduce pain levels

One of the most common difficulties faced by fibromyalgia sufferers is the constant pain affecting the entire body. This often hinders their ability to move freely or even get a good night’s sleep.

Chiropractic adjustments have helped restore health and decrease the tender spots (areas of pain around the joints) for many patients. In our office, adjusting the C1 bone, in particular, has proven to be effective in minimizing pressure points. Realignment and curve correction of the spine can lower tension in the fascia and release the trigger points–reducing fascial pain in the process.

Paves way for a better lifestyle

Good chiropractic care is all about improving the overall condition of the body. In our office, we can recommend some healthy changes to your lifestyle to promote a more holistic healing. This may include some exercise routines, simple stretches, or other physical activities to help your body heal itself.

Remember–good health is a process.

Nutritional recommendations

Good nutrition is a big part of our treatment! The right dietary changes and proper nutrition can help improve your condition and minimize pain and symptoms. In our office, we can take a look at your diet and advise you on some potential changes. Based on the other treatments–these changes may include essential foods or some nutritional supplements to help with the healing.

Suffering chronic pain all over the body can be a very stressful experience. And when no treatment seems to provide a promising relief, it just adds to the person’s stress and anxiety. At Lotus Chiropractic Care, we wish to bring you out of this vicious cycle.

With good chiropractic care, we can help you enter a relaxed state of mind, allowing you to be more optimistic about the healing. Patients feel empowered and more “in charge” of their condition. And that is crucial in every treatment.

In our office, Dr. Tanvi Desai will have a close look at your condition and find out the best treatment to help improve your quality of life. Because you deserve no less!
